Funding schemes

Types of grant

Horizon Europe offers several different types of grant (types of action; funding schemes) to reflect the aims of different projects. Below you can read about the aims, requirements and typical grant sizes for the individual grant types:

Research and Innovation Action (RIA)

Participants: ≥ 3 partners from 3 countries

Project length: 36-48 months

EU grant size: Typically between EUR 2–10 million

Aim: To support research project collaboration

Innovation Action (IA)

Participants: ≥ 3 partners from 3 countries

Project length: 30-36 months

EU grant size: EUR 2–10 million

Aim: To develop ideas, plans and designs for new or improved products, processes or services. Can include prototype development, testing, demonstration and product validation. Can only include a limited amount of research and development.

Coordination and Support Action (CSA)

Participants: ≥ 1 partner (but typically with several participants)

Project length: 12-30 months

EU grant size: EUR 0.5–3 million

Aim: To co-ordinate and create networks around research and innovation projects, programmes and policies. Does not include research activities

ERC-grants (STG, CoG og ADV)

Participants: 1 partner (but up to four partners for SyG)

Project length: 60 months

EU grant size:

  • Starting Grants: up to EUR 2.5 million
  • Consolidator Grants: up to EUR 3 million
  • Advances Grants: up to EUR 3.5 million
  • Synergy Grants: up to EUR 14 million

Aim: To support excellent (groundbreaking, high-gain/high-risk) basic research

Objective: Facilitation of researcher mobility to promote competency and career development

 

Innovation Training Networks (ITN)

Participants:

  • European Training Networks (ETN): At least three partners from at least three countries
  • European Industrial Doctorates (EID): At least one partner from a research institution and at least one business partner from at least two countries
  • European Joint Doctorates (EJD): At least three partners from research institutions from at least three countries

Amount of EU funding: Covers living expenses, accommodation expenses, operations and overheads for up to three years.

Project term: The maximum project term at institutional level is four years 

 

Individual Fellowships (IF)

Participants:

  • European Fellowships: One partner (applying to do research in an EU country)
  • Global Fellowships: One partner (from an EU country applying to do research outside the EU)
  • Amount of EU funding:Covers living expenses, accommodation expenses, operations and overheads for up to three years.

Project term:                               

  • European FellowshipsOne to two years
  • Global Fellowships: Two to three years

 

Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE) 

Participants: At least three institutional partners from at least three countries

Amount of EU funding: Covers the cost of posting employees for a period of up to one year

Project term: Up to four years

 

Co-funding of regional, national and international programmes (COFUND)

Participants: One public authority, research institution or company

Amount of EU funding: Up to EUR 10 million

Project term: Three to five years
