Language Services, Faculty of Arts

Our job is to help staff at the Faculty of Arts to communicate with students and staff who don’t speak Danish, and to communicate with the English-speaking world in general. We offer a broad range of language services:

  • Proofreading in English
  • Translation (Danish into English, and English into Danish)
  • The development and quality assurance of AU terminology
  • Language support with regard to both written and spoken English
  • Subtitles and voice-overs for videos

Our main tasks are to proofread articles written in English by the faculty’s researchers, and to proofread/translate for the Administration Centre and the Dean’s Office. For all other language tasks, please consult our external supplier, GlobalDenmark, au@global-denmark.dk. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions about GlobalDenmark, or if you need help with our translation software (Memsource).

GlobalDenmark supply translations at prices which have already been agreed with AU. If you have any questions about these prices, please contact Lenore Messick, lmm@au.dk

Language services for academic staff

How can we help you?

Texts for research publications in the Bibliometric Research Indicator (BFI)

We offer to proofread academic articles written in English by the faculty’s researchers, subject to the following criteria:

If you need more than this:

  • We will send you a list of approved freelancers, and you are welcome to contact them.
  • You will need to talk to your research programme director or school about funding.
  • You can send your text direct to a freelancer, and they will send their invoice to your school.

Other types of texts

We are also happy to proofread the following kinds of texts written in English:

  • Calls for papers
  • Abstracts
  • Applications for research projects
  • PhD assessments

We are always happy to arrange contact with external language consultants for tasks that lie beyond the scope of what we can offer. In such cases, you should arrange funding yourself.

Deadlines

We handle projects on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. If you want to be sure that we can deliver on time, please book in good time – preferably 2-3 weeks before your deadline, unless your text is short (max. 1,500 words).

How to book

If you have an article that needs proofreading, please send an email to sprogservice.arts@au.dk containing the following information:

  1. Your name and AU email address:
  2. Your school, position and subject area:
  3. The length of your text (no. of words including notes but excluding your bibliography*):
  4. When will you send the text to us (date/time):
  5. When do you want it back (date/time):
  6. Where will your text be published (which journal, for instance):
  7. Do you want British or American English:
  8. Any other comments (e.g. do you have a preferred proofreader):

*) Our service includes proofreading the main text and notes, but we don’t check reference lists or formatting.

NB: Please make sure that you observe any style guidelines laid down by the journal in question.

Sending us your text – and getting it back

  • Please send us your text as an email attachment (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) by the agreed date.
  • Please run a spellcheck before you send us your text.
  • We will use the track changes function in Word so you can see our suggestions.
  • Any comments and questions will appear in the margin.
  • Whenever possible, we will try to clear up any questions arising during our proofreading before your deadline.
