Quality assurance practice for education at Aarhus BSS

This quality assurance practice involves the Vice-dean for Education, the boards of studies, directors of studies, heads of department, programme administrators and others responsible for ensuring and developing the quality of the degree programmes at Aarhus BSS.

The quality assurance practice describes the roles and responsibilities in relation to the quality assurance work, as well as the processes, division of responsibilities and annual cycle for each of the five sub-policies that form part of Aarhus University’s quality assurance work in the field of education (available in Danish only).

The quality assurance work at Aarhus BSS revolves around the annual status meetings of the quality assurance work in the field of education and the five-yearly degree programme evaluations, which are briefly described below. In the menu to the right, you will find an elaboration of the principles and framework as well as other relevant documents.

ANNUAL STATUS REVIEW

The annual status review of the quality assurance work at Aarhus BSS takes point of departure in the shared principles and framework for the degree programme quality assurance processes at Aarhus University. Thus they are based on the values and objectives of AU’s policy for quality assurance in the field of education.

The annual status review of the quality assurance work is carried out in order to ensure that systematic quality reviews are performed on the degree programmes in their entirety. Annual reviews allow for comparisons with the previous year in order to identify the strengths, weaknesses and challenges of the degree programmes as well as to analyse and identify possible reasons and future courses of action.

The annual status review on quality assurance is structured in such a way that all degree programmes - both the ordinary and those in the field of continuing education - are reviewed every year, either individually or as part of a group of similar or related programmes. Degree programmes that are subject to a five-year degree programme evaluation are exempt. On these programmes, the annual status review is incorporated into the degree programme evaluation.

FIVE-YEAR DEGREE PROGRAMME EVALUATION

The degree programme evaluations at Aarhus BSS take point of departure in the shared principles and framework for the degree programme quality assurance processes at Aarhus University. Thus they are based on the values and objectives of AU’s policy for quality assurance in the field of education. An external expert, the body of external co-examiners and selected employers are involved in the degree programme evaluation.

Degree programme evaluations are important tools in the work to secure the quality and development of the school’s degree programmes. The evaluations should be viewed alongside the annual status review on quality assurance as well as the ongoing quality assurance initiatives.

The degree programme evaluations are based on dialogue and take point of departure in a self-evaluation report, which contains indicator-based data material. The external expert is responsible for challenging selected parts of the programme, and the subsequent discussion should lead to specific suggestions for actions and development initiatives.

Degree programmes may be evaluated individually or in connection with other relevant programmes. Each degree programme must be evaluated at least every five years. However, new programmes are not evaluated until after the first generation of graduates have completed the programme. The plan for degree programme evaluations at Aarhus BSS is based on when the programme was accredited as well as on a consideration of what programmes it would be appropriate to evaluate in the same round. The plan has been approved by the school management team.
