Organising examinations

Each course is associated with one or more exams, which aim to evaluate the students’ academic level. The academic objectives for the assessment of the exam are stated in the academic regulations. In cooperation with the director of studies, the board of studies must approve the practical organisation of the exams and other forms of assessment that are part of the exams, including guidelines for internal co-examination.

The lecturers are responsible for developing appropriate types of examinations and assessment strategies that support the learning objectives as well as the specific examination, including the development of exam questions. The board of studies ensures the quality of the alignment between teaching and exams.

The Centre for Teaching and Learning offers support to lecturers in connection with selecting the types of examinations and assessment strategies.

The Aarhus BSS Studies Administration supports and collaborates with the departments on the organisation of exams.

After each examination period, the directors of studies receive information regarding e.g. grading descriptions and failure rates. On the basis of these, the he or she identifies whether there are systematic problems with specific courses/types of examinations/degree programmes.

After each examination period, the board of studies discusses and follows up on relevant key figures in dialogue with the director of studies and the head of department. Extreme grading descriptions or failure rates are discussed with the Vice-dean for Education at the annual status review or in connection with the degree programme evaluation.

The Aarhus BSS Studies Administration handles examination appeals on behalf of the director of studies and presents the case to the relevant director of studies, who is responsible for handling examination appeals on behalf of the dean.

The Aarhus BSS Studies Administration handles the quality assurance and distribution of diplomas in collaboration with the AU Student Administration and Services.
