Mailman mailing list

Mailing list Manager Mailman is a web based system for handling mailing lists. The systems is known for its wide selection for settings which means that you can use Mailman in many different ways, e.g. as a function-related mailbox and an archive.

Mailman is used for two different types of mailing lists: 

  • @maillist.au.dk: is administered by a staff member at AU who have a staff email in the shared email and calendar system, Microsoft Exchange.
  • @studorg.au.dk: is administered by a student at AU who have a student email in post.au.dk.

You can have one or more roles in Mailman:

  • List administrator: is one or more persons who are responsible for the maintainance of the list. The administrator decides who can send emails to the list.

  • List moderator: If the list is set up with a list moderator, he or she can approve or decline emails send to the list. The list moderator is appointed by the list administrator.  
  • List member: List members rights are appointed by the list administrator. With a typical set up, list members can send emails to the list. Additionally, list members can be allowed to receive emails send by others to the lists, access the list's archives and have access to their own web member site.

How to set up a Mailman mailing list

IT support creates and names all Mailman mailing lists. Find your local IT support to the right. Please inform IT support if you want to set up a staff list or a student organisation list.

IT support needs information about who owns the Mailman mailing list. All Mailman mailing lists must have an owner who is identified with an AU ID. The owner is NOT a person i AU IT.

For student organisation Mailman mailing lists, the administator must be an active student with a @post.au.dk email address. 

If AU IT can see that the administrator does not have a staff email or a post.au.dk email, the Mailman list will be closed.

NB! The owner can appoint more administrators.

Forgotten password

  • List administrator: If you forget your password, please contact your local IT support. Find contact information to the right.
  • List member or list moderator: If you forget your password, please contact your list administrator, who can give you a new password. 

 

What you can do with a Mailman mailing list

  • A Mailman mailing list can contain both internal and external persons. 
  • You have an email archive with all emails send to the list. 
  • Great flexibility. The list administrator can set up the list so that all members are able to subscribe/unsubscribe to the list.
  • The administrator can give others access to read the archive.
  • You can able to have more advanced lists.
