Additional national and international rules and declarations

In recent years, international guidelines and recommendations have been developed with the aim of promoting research integrity. 3 widely recognised documents are of particular importance:

The Singapore Statement on Research Integrity (written at The 2nd World Conference on Research Integrity 2010)
The Montreal Statement on Research Integrity in Cross-Boundary Research Collaborations (written at The 3rd World Conference on Research Integrity 2013)
The European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity (written by The European Science Foundation and All European Academies in 2011)

Act on research misconduct

The Vancouver guidelines (ICMJE)

The Vancouver authorship guidelines − the "uniform requirements" − were prepared by The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, "The Vancouver Group" (ICMJE) and have since been adopted by 600 medical journals.

The rules define authorship and outline clear criteria for co-authorship to be fulfilled by every individual author.

The Vancouver authorship guidelines also include other recommendations, for instance regarding the declaration of conflict of interest.

The Budapest Declaration

The Budapest Declaration was adopted by UNESCO in 1999, and summarises what is and should be the overall goal of all science and scientific research.

The Singapore Statement

The Singapore Statement from 2010 is an international initiative aiming to develop joint principles, definitions and guidelines for research integrity and responsible conduct of research worldwide.

The Montreal Statement

In the autumn of 2013, the Singapore Statement was supplemented by a Montreal Statement with recommendations on how to ensure research integrity in collaborative research projects spanning countries, research disciplines and sectors.

The European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity

The European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity from 2011 (revised 2017) was prepared by the European Science Foundation (ESF) in cooperation with the ALLEA (European Federation of all Academies for Sciences and Humanities). The document testifies to agreement among approx. 30 European countries on an overall set of principles on research integrity and it also contains a series of recommendations and proposals for precise procedures for the handling of breaches of responsible conduct of research.
