Competence development for employees who are made redundant

Three grants will ensure that competence development courses are available to employees who, unfortunately, are being made redundant as a consequence of budget reductions at Aarhus University.

The foundation for competence development in the state sector (FUSA) has granted an average of DKK 10,000 per dismissed employee who completes a competence development course - corresponding to approx. DKK 1.8 million. In addition, as suggested by the joint union representatives, the university will provide an additional DKK 1.5 million from central funds, while the ‘the collective dismissals pool’ (varslingspuljen) will contribute DKK 350,000. This brings the total pool of funding to approximately DKK 3.6 million if all dismissed employees complete a competence development course.

Earmarked funds

These funds are earmarked for employees who are made redundant and employees who have converted a planned dismissal to a voluntary resignation. They must be spent on relevant development of the individual’s professional competences.

"As a workplace, we have a huge responsibility to provide the individual employee with the best possible foundation for moving on, and so it’s positive that we’re in a position to accommodate the joint union reps’ wishes," says Rector Brian Bech Nielsen.

Wide selection of courses

AU HR will offer courses tailored to employees’ needs, and employees also have the option of selecting courses and study programmes from the AU Human Resources course catalogue.

Employees can also find relevant external courses themselves and apply to FUSA for a refund of course fees. AU HR would like to encourage employees to take advantage of their contracts with course providers, as they are able to offer good discounts to course participants.

Rector: Best possible use of funds

Employees should clarify what types of competence development are relevant in collaboration with the manager they normally make competence development agreements with. In this context, it may be useful to draw on the advice and guidance employees receive through their outplacement programme with Mercuri Urval.

AU HR has applied for and received the competence development funds from FUSA. AU HR has also made an agreement on funds from the ‘the collective dismissals pool’ for courses for AU employees offered through the municipal Job Centre. To benefit from these funds, employees who’ve been made redundant need to contact the local Job Centre.

"AU HR Competence Development have made a tremendous effort in relation to raising these funds," says the rector, who adds: "It’s important that we make the best possible use of these funds, and that managers aid our employees in laying a sound basis for moving forward in their careers."
