Noise and mess in the Nobel Park library this summer

The library in the Nobel Park is going to be a noisy and messy place from 15 June onwards owing to building work, and the reading room in the basement is going to be closed all summer. But let’s look on the bright side: by the time the new semester starts, the library is going to be a brighter and livelier place to read and study.

The students and staff who use the library will have to put up with a good deal of noise and mess during the summer. Structural work is being done in the basement, and there’s going to be a new reading room on the ground floor. There are also going to be new, specialised reading rooms in three of the existing reading rooms on the second floor. These will be devoted to history, theology, the study of religion and the classical subjects.

“The noise level will hit its maximum when they cut a hole in a load-bearing wall in building 1461. The whole building will shake for about a week in July,” says library manager Maia Louise Lunn Vonsbæk.

Hand in your books before the holiday

The aim of the rebuilding work is to create a brighter, livelier library and study environment. The most popular books are going to be removed from the compact shelving in the basement and put on open shelving instead. Unfortunately, this also means that the books will be inaccessible during the building work.

“We would like everyone to return their library books before they go on holiday, and by 1 July at the latest. This will simplify the complicated process involved when you remove 24,000 books from 18 different collections in the compact shelving and place them in a single, joint system instead,” says Vonsbæk.

Remote lending

You will still be able to borrow books via library.au.dk. But it might take a bit longer to get hold of them because they will have to be ordered from other libraries. It’s called remote lending.

Help desk open between 09.00 and 11.00

The basement will be closed until next semester, and there will be no access to the books. From 29 June until 14 August the library will be manned by the summer staff only. This means that you can only get help and guidance at the library’s help desk from 09.00 until 11.00.

You can find out how the building work is progressing at the study and staff portal.
