Professor Sander Greenland is within the international elite in theoretical and applied epidemiology. For decades, he has been a leading force in developing and refining the research methods used in public health and clinical epidemiology. Without doubt, Professor Greenland is the most productive scientist in theoretical epidemiology worldwide with more than 350 papers published in peer reviewed journals, some of which have been cited over 500 times.

He combines skills in mathematics, public health, statistics, philosophy, and epidemiology and he has used these skills to help developing epidemiology to the high level it has today. He is the author of some of the best known and most widely used textbooks in epidemiology. We now know much more about the power and the limitations of epidemiologic methods than we did 30 years ago; much due to his achievements over the years, and Sander Greenland has played a key role in this development.

Professor Greenland has also been the one to introduce new methods developed in other disciplines, such as causal diagrams or statistical methods used in econometrics, into epidemiology. He is well read in many other disciplines and he has added the necessary educational background to understand complicated technical developments of potential relevance for public health coming from these other areas of research. His current interest addresses use of public health science in policy and in legal matters.

Professor Greenland figures as an expert in many reviews of scientific evidence, and he has been a strong advocate for keeping high standards for making causal inference based upon statistical analyses. He has provided much of the ammunition for the misuse of statistical significance testing in clinical research and in public health and he has helped develop alternative ways of analysing data. His ideas have often been controversial but are receiving more and more support from, for example, editors of leading journals.

Greenland was professor at the Department of Epidemiology, School of Public Health at UCLA, while Professor Jørn Olsen chaired the department. Greenland has co-authored several papers published from Aarhus University, and he has hold courses for Aarhus University.
