Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II’s Travel Grant to students at Aarhus University 2019

Master’s degree student Axel Hee Rømer, School of Culture and Society, Aarhus University

Axel Hee Rømer is motivated, ambitious and demonstrates a high level of initiative in order to deepen his knowledge. A good example of this is his interest in maritime archaeology, which prompted him to go beyond the normal classroom experience offered in Aarhus and visit museums in Sweden to learn about shipwreck finds, take a course in underwater archaeology during his exchange semester at Christian-Albrechts-Universität in Kiel and volunteer at marine archaeological excavations with Moesgård and Stranding museums. In his BA and MA-level coursework, Axel demonstrates a high level of competence, independence and hard work as well as an eagerness to tackle intellectually challenging subjects.

Axel is also actively participating in extramural activities broadening his knowledge of history and archaeology, perfecting his fieldwork skills and engaging in public dissemination of research. He regularly volunteers at excavations organised by Danish and foreign museums.

The prize will allow Axel to conduct museum research abroad in relation to his Master’s thesis project concerned with early Danish maritime history, colonial trade and exploration.

Molecular nutrition and food technology Master’s degree student Line Pedersen, Department of Food Science, Aarhus University

Line Pedersen has demonstrated extraordinary motivation in relation to her chosen subject within food science. The focus of her Bachelor's project was consumer surveys involving young people at different educational levels at a number of schools in Odense. Pedersen was responsible for contacting the schools, preparing the questionnaire and carrying out the surveys in the various classes. Her Bachelor's project developed into a large experimental study for which she processed the data herself, and the result was a very well-structured and well-written Bachelor’s project in English.

Pedersen has participated enthusiastically in her classes, and has a strong grasp of the entire food chain, in particular of the dependence of food quality on all processes from farm to fork, which is the central focus of the Bachelor's degree programme in agrobiology. Among her many other activities, Line has volunteered at the food festival, where she has presented department’s research and degree programmes.

She would like to do a Master’s degree project on sensory analysis at the company DuPont, which has sensory analysis facilities all over the world, including in Singapore and the United States. The travel grant can contribute to making this a reality.

Sport science Master’s degree student Jon Hagen Herskind, Department of Public Health, Aarhus University.

As a student on the sport science programme, Jon Hagen has distinguished himself as a particularly dedicated and talented student who has shown great interest in and participated actively in all classroom activities, as well as several research projects in the fields of training and rehabilitation and muscle physiology.

On the background of his strong academic performance, Herskind has been accepted to the Research Honours programme for particularly talented students at the Faculty of Health, and has most recently been admitted to the 4 + 4 PhD scheme, which will allow him to continue his research in a PhD project in direct continuation of his Master’ thesis.

Herskind’s ongoing research project on muscular fatigue has already generated a number of promising preliminary results, and the travel grant will enable Jon to present them as well as continue to develop his research in collaboration with research institutions abroad, where he will gain valuable experience relevant to the scientific and methodological aspects of his project.

Political science Master’s degree student Jannik Fenger, Department of Political Science, Aarhus University.

Jannik Fenger completed his Bachelor's degree in political science in the summer of 2019. He received top marks in most of his subjects, and is one of the very best students in his class. Alongside his Bachelor's studies, he served as a student assistant on various research projects, including a project funded by the European Research Council. He also served on the Board of Studies for Political Science and Social Science.

Fenger has academic interests within the field of comparative and general political science. He is particularly interested in the relationship between ethnic conflict, diversity and attitude formation, with special focus on the creation of social trust. Fenger has mastered the advanced quantitative methods required for empirical work in this field.

He will continue pursuing this interest in connection with his stay at Uppsala University, where he has been admitted for the 2020 spring semester. Uppsala is a leading university in several of the central disciplines of political science.
