Walter F. Boron kan kort karakteriseres som en særdeles succesfuld videnskabsmand. Han har været med til at etablere samarbejder mellem forskere ved Aarhus Universitet og førende universiteter i USA og på den måde været med til at sætte Aarhus Universitet på verdenskortet

Walter F. Boron er professor ved Department of Physiology and Biophysics ved Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio. Hans forskningsfelt er transport af syre-base molekyler over cellernes membraner. Ifølge Allan Flyvbjerg, dekan for det sundhedsvidenskabelige fakultet ved Aarhus Universitet, har Walter F. Boron lavet en række originale observationer af meget høj kvalitet, som har påvirket nutidens syn på centrale fysiologiske mekanismer og dannet grundlaget for udvikling af ny medicin.

”Walter F. Borons innovative tankegang har skabt en forståelse for kroppens syre-base-regulering. Han har inspireret mange forskere ved Aarhus Universitet, og det samarbejde, som gennem de seneste 15 år har fundet sted mellem professor Boron og disse forskere, har været særledes værdifuldt og resulteret i mange fællespublikationer,” siger Allan Flyvbjerg.

Professor Boron har udgivet en lang række videnskabelige artikler og har også selv været hovedredaktør på den meget anvendte lærebog i fysiologi Medical Physiology. Bogen har især høstet ros for dens meget pædagogiske tilgang til fysiologiens svære koncepter. Walter F. Boron har også påtaget sig redaktionelle opgaver på nogle af de bedste videnskabelige tidsskrifter indenfor fysiologi.

Walter F. Boron er uddannet ved Saint Louis University og Washington University i St. Louis. Han har besøgt Aarhus Universitet seks gange, senest som key note speaker i forbindelse med PhD Day på Health i januar.
