Professor Charles Dinarello er udnævnt til æresdoktor på Aarhus Universitet. Charles Dinarello er professor i medicin og immunologi ved Colorado School of Medicin og professor i eksperimentel medicin ved Radboud Universitet i Holland.
Gennem årene har han set sin forskning munde ud i medicinsk behandling og har derved hjulpet tusindvis af patienter, siden han gjorde en stor opdagelse i 1984. Her påviste han eksistensen af proteinet IL-1, der spiller en rolle for mange immundefekte sygdomme. Hans forskning har hjulpet patienter, der lider af inflammatoriske sygdomme, for eksempel leddegigt.
Fra 1983 til 2002 var den nu 72-årige Charles Dinarello nummer fire på listen over verdens mest citerede videnskabsmænd. Han er blevet citeret intet mindre end 83.670 gange for sine mere end 1000 videnskabelige artikler og 250 bogkapitler om cytokiner. Hans imponerende virke har fået flere til at spå ham som en værdig nobelprismodtager.
Charles Dinarello er gentagne gange blevet tildelt æresbevisninger og har vundet priser for sin forskning. Disse udmærkelser har han modtaget fra medicinske selskaber og universiteter over hele kloden. Han har titlen af æresdoktor på University of Marseille, Weizmann Institute of Science i Israel, University of Frankfurt, Roosevelt University og Albany Medical College i USA, Radboud University i Holland, Trinity College i Irland, og nu også på Aarhus Universitet, hvor han siden 2010 har samarbejdet med Aarhus Universitetshospitals Infektionsmedicinsk Afdeling.
