Europe’s university VIPs coming to Aarhus

Aarhus University (AU) will be the rendezvous for university people from all over Europe when the European University Association (EUA) holds its Annual Conference 2011 at AU on 13–15 April and marks the 10th Anniversary of the EUA.

The theme of this year’s conference is Investing Today in Talent for Tomorrow, and the approximately 450 people attending the conference will exchange and develop ideas on how to make the best possible use of the European talent pool and attract the very best young researchers from the rest of the world.

As a knowledge region, Europe faces extremely fierce global competition, and the EUA was set up a decade ago to create a joint European forum aimed at developing the region as a whole within the areas of research, education, knowledge exchange and talent development. The EUA has approximately 850 members from 46 countries.

Rector Lauritz B. Holm-Nielsen has been strongly involved in the internationalisation of Aarhus University ever since he took up his position, and he was elected to the EUA Board in 2008. He is one of two candidates nominated for the post of EUA President, and the choice is between him and Maria Helena Nazaré of Portugal. The election takes place on Thursday 14 April.

Rectors and vice-rectors from all over Europe will be attending the conference, in addition to prominent people such as Charlotte Sahl-Madsen, Denmark’s Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, and Ditlev Engel, President and CEO, Vestas Wind Systems.

Business community holds parallel conference

While the EUA conference is taking place, a parallel business conference has been planned by the Aarhus Business Network (Erhverv Aarhus). Participants will be asked the initial question: Talent, X factor – or is it really much more a matter of hard work? They will then try to answer how the talents of the future can best be prepared to do as well as possible both now and in the future. The parallel conference is being held on Thursday 14 April, and the results will be presented to the EUA on Friday15 April.
