Mapped Cultural Heritage
Archaeological IT (http://www.arkaeologi.dk/it/) has collected digital versions of georeferenced old cadastre maps (known as Original 1) and published these maps via web mapping services (WMS).
This part of the project was financed by the Cowi Foundation.
Original 1 maps are covering the Kingdom of Denmark in scale 1:4.000 and contain information about cadastres, cadastral numbers, boundaries, land owners, roads, land yield and topographic elements such as forests, fields, towns, buildings, meadows, mounds etc. Each map typically covers one owner guild (small administrative unit).
Various cultural institutions have used the maps ex. archaeological institutions, universities and museums. In this working process it is often necessary to georeference the maps to use it in GIS software and to correlate the informations between different map (old, modern, orthophoto, topographic etc).
All the single maps (there are approximately 9.000 owner guilds) were scanned to raster format by The National Geodataagency in the years 2006-2008 (http://arkiv.kms.dk/mpn/kms/mpn_info2/index.htm#) and now almost 2.000 of these maps can be accessed through AU-GIS’s webservices.

Archaeological IT is a unit under the Department of Culture and Society and is situated at Moesgaard Museum, south of Aarhus. We serve as partner in research projects and constitute a supporting role regarding archaeological IT applications for both university and museum.
