AU to host EU on 3 July: Buildings will be closed off 

The north-eastern corner of the University Park will be cordoned off for security reasons on 2 and 3 July in connection with the official opening of the Danish presidency of the Council of the EU at AU. This means that some AU staff and students will need to work/study from home during this time. Get the details here.

On 3 July, the European Commission and the Danish government will visit AU for the official opening of the Danish presidency of the Council of the EU. The event will take place in AU’s iconic Main Hall on the Aarhus campus. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, along with other top political figures, will be visiting our campus. For security reasons, the buildings in the north-eastern corner of the University Park will be closed off on 2 and 3 July. This means staff and students in the affected units will need to work from home on both days.   

Read on to find out how the EU visit will affect the buildings along Ringgaden near the Main Hall below. You can also see which buildings will be affected on the map. 

  • The buildings in the north-eastern corner of the University Park will be closed off on 2 and 3 July. This will affect Aarhus BSS in particular. The buildings on both sides of Ringgaden in the vicinity of the the Main Hall will also be closed, and the area around Stakladen, Frederik Nielsens Vej and Tåsingegade will be blocked off. All staff and students who work/study in the affected buildings will need to work from home on 2 and 3 July.  
  • All storage cabinets in the affected buildings must be left unlocked when staff and/or students leave their offices before 2 July. This is because the police must be able to access them during their security checks. However, office doors may be locked as usual. 
  • The Royal Danish Library (Victor Albecks vej) will remain open. On 2 and 3 July, it will only be possible to use the University Park entrance. Note that it will not be possible to park in the car park in front of the University Park entrance on 2 and 3 July, so access will be limited.   
  • Ringgaden will be blocked off from 05:30 (5 am) - approx. 16:00 (4 pm) on 3 July, at both the Nørrebrogade and Langelandsgade intersections.  
  • Fredrik Nielsens Vej and the parking spaces in front of building 1445 will be blocked off 30 June - 4 July, both days included. 
  • The Social Sciences Canteen will be closed 2 - 3 July. 
  • Stakboladen, the Student Bar and the Student Café will be closed 30 June - 4 July, both days included.

The European Commission’s visit to Aarhus
Quite a few major events will take place in connection with the Danish presidency of the Council of the EU starting in July 2025 and running through December. The Danish government, the European Commission, European heads of state and government and the Royal House of Denmark will take part.  

The official opening will be kicked off at Aarhus University on 3 July. There will be a meeting between the European Commission and the Danish government and a press conference with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.  

After the opening event at Aarhus University, European Commission President von der Leyen and Prime Minister Frederiksen will meet with King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark at ARoS The royal couple will also participate in an opening ceremony  at Aarhus City Hall in the evening.  

Aarhus will also celebrate the Danish Presidency with a free European street party in the City Hall Park. The event is open to all, and will feature concerts, debates and communal dining.
