New department names to be discussed in working groups

The Dean's executive team has asked the heads of department to set up a working group for each of the six new departments. The groups are to suggest a new Danish name for their respective departments. Once all the Danish names have been decided, they will get an equivalent English name.

In order to build consensus on the names for the new departments at Business and Social Sciences, the Dean's executive team has now asked the heads of department and AU Herning to set up a working group for each of the new departments. The idea is that each group must come up with suggestions for a new name for their own department.

– This process will ensure the right sense of ownership of the new department names, says Dean Svend Hylleberg.

He adds that the Dean's executive team welcomes more traditional Danish names for the new departments than the current English versions, but he also emphasises that the new names must reflect the profile of the new departments and not merely point back at the old department structure.

Once all the new Danish names have been determined, they will be adequately translated into English.

– The Danish department names should have a touch of tradition, but it is also important that particularly the English names indicate interdisciplinary collaboration across our main academic area. Yet we must ensure that we do not scale down our successful achievements, such as the very strong brands of our degree programmes and the outstanding research environments at our departments. For instance, the programmes in political science are not – and will not be – business studies, but preferably there should be increasing collaboration between related or overlapping fields across the different departments, says Svend Hylleberg.
