The process for assessment and approval
When the dissertation has been submitted to the Dean a receipt has been issued, Au Research and Talent is responsible for further processing.
1. Approval
Shortly after the delivery it is decided whether or not the dissertation can be taken in for assessment and defence at the Faculty of Arts.
2. Assessment Committee is set up
If the dissertation is accepted for assessment, an assessment committee will be appointed within 3 month and the author will be asked to submit four more copies of the dissertation.
When the assessment committee is appointed, the author is informed about the composition. Subsequently, the author has two weeks to take exception to the committee – or to withdraw the dissertation.
3. Recommendation from the assessment committee.
If the candidate (the author) approves the assessment committee, the committee has 8 months to carry out an assessment and to draw up a report on whether the dissertation is accepted for defence or rejected.
When the assessment committee has submitted the recommendation in writing to the candidate, the person in question has three weeks to advance remarks or to withdraw the dissertation.
If the dissertation is taken on to defence the candidate sends in yet another copy of the dissertation, in order for it to be submitted for public review four weeks ahead of the defence.
4. Defence
The defence is public and will be announced on the web and in the daily press. Additional announcements can take place after consultation with the candidate. This will be coordinated with AU Communication at Arts.
The oral defence is lead by a member of the academic staff. He or she will announce at the beginning of the oral defence where the opponents can register for ex. auditorio.
The defense will usually take place in Aarhus on a Friday between 12.00 -6.00 pm in lecture theatre 1, building 1441.
5. Final approval
After the defense, there will be a final written report given to the candidate. He or she has 14 days to submit his/her own written comments on the report. The Academic Council determines whether the higher doctoral degree can be awarded - and the outcome will be informed to the candidate.
