The Ministry of Higher Education and Science has just informed Aarhus University that the BA in Marketing and Management Communication (BAMMC) and the MA in Corporate Communication (MACC) at the Department of Management at Aarhus BSS are to be discontinued. Earlier today, all affected employees and students were notified of the decision.

Dean Thomas Pallesen stresses that all currently enrolled students will be able to complete their Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programme. Aarhus BSS will do everything possible to ensure that the students will be able to continue their studies on a relevant Master’s degree programme.

The discontinuation of the BAMMC and MACC is a result of the Ministry of Higher Education and Science’s decision to reduce the number of student places on English-language degree programmes at Danish universities. On the basis of this decision, AU, along with the other universities, has been discussing how to implement the reduction target. Following discussions with the Ministry, it has been decided to discontinue the BAMMC and MACC programmes at the Department of Management at Aarhus BSS.

The discontinuation of the BAMMC will take place starting from the 2019 summer intake. Thus, currently enrolled students will be able to complete their degree programme. The discontinuation of the MACC will take place starting from the 2020 intake to accommodate the BAMMC students who are expected to complete their Bachelor’s degree programme this summer and who have a legal right of admission to the MACC (i.e. the class of 2016). For BAMMC students from the classes of 2017 and 2018, other solutions must be found. This work will start immediately and will be headed by Vice-dean Per Andersen, who will be working in close collaboration with the board of studies, the degree programme management and the department management team.

What happens next?

The full implications of the discontinuation of the two programmes are not yet known. For that reason, Aarhus BSS will now survey the situation and establish collaborations with all relevant bodies and boards representing employees as well as students.

So far, all members of the section have been invited to an information meeting on Monday 12 November, while Vice-dean Per Andersen has invited all students on the two degree programmes to an information meeting on 22 November. In addition, a meeting for all employees at the Department of Management will be held on Tuesday 13 November. The local liaison committee has also been informed and will be involved in the process on an ongoing basis.
