Our physical and psychological work environment has a direct impact on our well-being and productivity, which is why it’s important that managers and staff continue to focus on our safety, health, psychological safety and culture at work. As an occupational health and safety representative, you can help to ensure a good work environment in your unit.

If this sounds like something for you, you can register as a candidate in the occupational health and safety organisation elections at AU from 27 November. Registration is open for two weeks. Contact the occupational health and safety group or manager in your unit to find out how. Your motivation and engagement can make a difference.

If you want to know more, you can find lots of relevant information about the different occupational health and safety groups at AU on their websites. You can also read more about what being an occupational health and safety representative at AU actually involves.

What does an occupational health and safety representative do?

A good work environment should provide a supportive framework for our daily professional lives. But what does being an occupational health and safety representative actually involve?

An occupational health and safety representative:

  • is a spokesperson for members of staff who communicates observations and recommendations about the work environment
  • is part of a local occupational health and safety group with a manager
  • has a say in initiatives and decisions that improve the work environment in your unit
  • support management in their ongoing focus on ensuring and developing a good work environment

Some of the tasks that occupational health and safety representatives perform in collaboration with management are:

  • analysing and preventing work-related injuries
  • planning and carrying out specific health and safety-related tasks, such as risk assessments and evacuation drills
  • participating in workplace assessment processes in their unit, such as following up on action plans
  • helping to ensure a good psychological work environment and to develop AU as a workplace
