New English names at the Faculty of Arts

Sections will be called departments, and departments will be called schools.

On 28 January 2015, and in line with a proposal presented by the Faculty of Arts, the senior management team decided that in future the faculty will use the terms “schools” and “departments” instead of “departments” and “sections” respectively. The corresponding Danish terms (institut and afdeling respectively) will not be changed.

During the problem analysis and review process, it became apparent that our individual subject areas felt that their identities and individual profiles had to some extent been lost because they had been grouped in large units under the considerable scope of the faculty’s broad umbrella. A lot of people feel that this situation needs to be rectified, and the new English names are a step in this direction.

The implementation of the new names on websites, signs and letterheads as well in administrative systems and elsewhere will be delayed pending potential changes in the names of our schools and departments. This subject is currently being discussed as part of the follow-up on the faculty’s review process, with a decision being made by 1 April this year.
