Social Sciences and Business

The programme

The PhD programme in Social Sciences and Business ensures that Aarhus BSS is able to train PhD students whose areas of research span several of or lie between the six other fields and where supervision competencies are available at Aarhus BSS.

The PhD programme enrolls PhD students that have (interdisciplinary) research projects related to for example specific (interdisciplinary) research centres or PhD students with particular research profiles that cut across the six other fields at Aarhus BSS.

Research facilities available

PhD students will be connected to one of the 6 academic departments at Aarhus BSS. It is important that a PhD project either fits into one of the below existing research environments, or can be based within a department despite the project’s span of several fields.

National Centre for Register-based Research aims at contributing to the integration of register-based research between health sciences and social sciences, and strengthening the use of register data in social sciences. The Centre’s research mainly focuses on epidemiological studies of schizophrenia, mania, depression, and suicide. Research is based upon Danish registers and increasingly upon genetic and other biological data.

Danish Centre for Studies in Research and Research Policy has an interdisciplinary profile, which combines both various research disciplines in the social sciences and humanities and a wide variety of research methods. The Centre’s research focuses on research policy, innovation policy and university policy, and contributes to both the theoretical and empirical developments within the field.

Centre for Alcohol and Drug Research offers an interdisciplinary field of research within drug and alcohol studies, covering anthropology, criminology, economics, media science, psychology, social epidemiology, and sociology. The Centre’s research focuses on treatment, prevention, policy and consumption of both legal and illegal substances.

TrygFondens Centre for Child Research is an interdisciplinary research centre that focuses on impact evaluations of social, educational and crime prevention programmes targeting Danish children and youth. The  centre uses experimental and quasi-experimental research designs to measure causal effects to determines what works. We also have expert knowledge in analysing program cost effectiveness and cost benefit.

Centre for Educational Development is a merger of Aarhus University's four former educational centres CUDiM at Arts, CUL at BSS, CESU at Health, STLL at Natural Sciences and Technical Sciences as well as the EDU IT unit. The centre is working with ambitious research-based and experimental practice. Hence, we work together with other innovative environments at local, national and international levels to ensure that the pedagogical, didactic and system-technical choices made by all of us at the universities are based on solid and up-to-date scientific evidence.
