AU replaces landline phones with Teams

If you use a landline phone at AU, from now on, you must use Microsoft Teams to make calls, since the current landline system is now outdated. If you make all your calls on a mobile phone, this change will not affect you.

Landline phones at AU are replaced by Teams.

Before long, the landlines at AU will have rung for the last time. Instead of picking up the receiver, you must now use your computer to make a call. During spring 2022, all employees with landlines will have their numbers moved to the collaboration platform Teams, which many people at the university already use in order to chat with, meet or call colleagues and partners. Because, as project manager Karsten Ovesen from AU IT explains, Teams can also be used to make calls:

“The landline system can no longer be updated sufficiently, so we have had to come up with a different solution. Teams was chosen as the replacement because AU has access to the Teams Phone System through its license to Microsoft Office 365, but we also considered the user perspective. Many people already use Teams, which will hopefully make the transition smoother for those who need to adjust to making calls via the Teams app,” he says.

In autumn 2021 and early 2022, AU IT tested the Teams Phone System among a wide range of employees, and, overall, the transition ran effortlessly.

The Teams Phone System can be used on a computer, mobile phone or other mobile device that has Teams installed. You can use Teams to call both landline numbers and mobile phones and to receive calls – also from people who don’t use Teams themselves.

The change has no effect on mobile telephony, which will continue as normal.

Employees who currently have a landline number will automatically have it moved to Teams once the landline system is replaced by the Teams Phone System, unless they wish to entirely get rid of their landline number. Employees who are affected by the move will be notified directly via email with guidance and more information about the process.

Teams Phone System is for everyone

Everyone is able to make use of the Teams Phone System, which will allow everyone to call landline numbers and mobile phones from their Teams account.
