ECTS credits and student workloads at Bachelor’s and Master’s level

Number of lessons

During a lesson, the teacher and the students are in contact either in the classroom or via EDU-IT. The number of lessons on the individual courses/modules should contribute towards the objective of:

  • 168 lessons per semester on average at Bachelor’s level
  • 112 lessons per semester on average at Master’s level

The number of lessons must be balanced against the ECTS weighting of the course. When planning your teaching, you can obtain information about the number of lessons allocated to a specific course/module from your head of department or course coordinator. They can also provide information on how the lessons should be distributed between lectures, classroom teaching and supervision.

Number of ECTS credits and student workloads

The degree programmes at the Faculty of Arts are structured as full-time programmes comprising 1640 working hours per year or 60 ECTS credits. The workload is especially intensive during exam periods, but otherwise we aim to distribute it evenly throughout the semester. A large part of the full-time programme consists of preparation for and follow-up on lessons in study groups and/or individually, including in-depth study of texts, exercises, presentations, peer feedback and assignments. At the Faculty of Arts, there is the following relation between the number of ECTS credits and the students’ working hours:

  • 5 ECTS credits correspond to approx. 137 working hours
  • 10 ECTS credits correspond to approx. 273 working hours
  • 15 ECTS credits correspond to approx. 410 working hours
  • 20 ECTS credits correspond to approx. 547 working hours
  • 25 ECTS credits correspond to approx. 683 working hours
  • 30 ECTS credits correspond to approx. 820 working hours

Working hours include preparation, lessons and exams.
