24,000 applications to AU

The number of young people applying to study at Aarhus University continues to grow. This year the university has received 24,009 applications, of which 9,140 are first-choice applications. The applications are distributed widely across the university’s study programmes, and it is expected that 8,000 new students will be enrolled.

The technical/scientific and the social science programmes have attracted a lot of applicants, as have cultural and language studies such as Russian, Brazilian, Chinese, Hindi and Japanese. It looks as though economic developments worldwide are giving the young food for thought, with many choosing the courses generally demanded by the labour market.

Applicants receive answers to their applications on 30 July.

Lauritz B. Holm-Nielsen new president of Euroscience

On Thursday 12 July, Euroscience, the European research organisation, announced that Aarhus University’s rector, Professor Lauritz B. Holm-Nielsen, has been appointed president of the organisation.

Rector Lauritz B. Holm-Nielsen has been a member of Euroscience’s Governing Board since 2008, and is now taking on the task of improving conditions for research, talent development and knowledge exchange in Europe as the organisation’s president and spokesperson.

Euroscience stands, among other things, behind Euroscience Open Forum (ESOF), one of Europe’s biggest research events with more than 5,000 delegates which is held every other year.

The current president of Euroscience, Enric Banda, is officially handing over to Lauritz B. Holm-Nielsen in Dublin, where ESOF2012 is taking place on 11-15 July.

Among other things, Euroscience works to develop the talents of young researchers and identifies the most outstanding young researchers in the EU. Last year, the organisation named Dorthe Ravnsbæk from Science and Technology as Europe’s best PhD student, and Dorthe was honoured at a special ceremony in connection with the ESOF conference in Dublin.

EU research commissioner handed Aarhus Declaration
The EU Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, was presented with the Aarhus Declaration by Rector Lauritz B. Holm-Nielsen at the ESOF conference in Dublin.

The Aarhus Declaration was drawn up in connection with the large EU conference Excellence Revisited – the value of excellence, which took place at Aarhus University in April. The declaration includes recommendations on how the EU can best ensure good research results from its coming research programme Horizon 2020, which has a total budget of EUR 80 billion.
