Absence

In some situations, as an employee, you may be entitled to be absent from work. A distinction is made between absence due to sickness, and other types of absence.

Your own sickness

As an employee, you are entitled to be absent if you are unable to work as a result of your sickness. You may also be entitled to be absent if you have an appointment for treatment within the healthcare system based on a doctor’s referral, or for medical or dental appointments.

Sickness in your family

In addition, the Agreement on Leave for Family Reasons (Aftale om tjenestefrihed af familiemæssige årsager), relating to the collective agreement, gives you the right to be absent from work in a number of different situations in case of sickness in your family. However, it is a requirement that you are covered by this agreement. The Danish Act on Employees’ Right to Leave for Special Family Reasons (Lov om lønmodtageres ret til fravær fra arbejde af særlige familiemæssige årsager) gives employees the right to be absent in some of the same situations as the agreement. This act covers all employees.
