Funding for collaboration with private or public enterprises

Apply for AU Connect funding to strengthen development and innovation through collaboration between researchers and businesses.

Aarhus University is once again offering AU Connect funding to support researchers at the university who wish to develop or expand specific collaborations with private or public sector organisations.

AU Connect is funded by Aarhus University’s 2025 innovation grant. The funds come from the 2025 Research Reserve Agreement and the 2024 Entrepreneurship Package.


Who can apply?

• Academic staff at Aarhus University, including PhD students.

How much funding is available?

  • Applicants may apply for up to DKK 150,000 to cover relevant expenses related to the collaboration.

What can the funding be used for?

The funding can be used to explore opportunities for new collaborations with companies, test new collaboration methods, further develop existing collaborations, or work as an interim researcher in a company.

Examples of eligible activities include:

  • Testing an idea for a product or service in collaboration with a company
  • Further development of a technology or service within a company
  • Collaborating with a public sector organisation on, for example, analytical reports

Who can the collaboration partner be?

Private and public sector organisations and NGOs, both in Denmark and internationally.

What can the funding cover?

  • Full or partial teaching/advisory buyout for the researcher
  • Meeting costs related to the collaboration
  • Travel and accommodation costs related to the collaboration
  • Communication activities – if these are a significant part of the collaboration
  • Materials for experiments/equipment and consultancy services (up to a maximum of 10% of the total grant)
  • Documented administrative expenses (up to a maximum of 20% of the total grant)

What is not covered by the funding?

  • Overhead – no overhead is calculated for the grant, though documented administrative expenses may be covered up to 20% of the total grant
  • Salaries for the collaboration partner or their employees
  • Projects aimed at students

Application and documentation

Applications must be submitted using the application form.

The application must include both a project description and a budget, and it must be signed and approved by the applicant’s department head.

Documentation and cost coverage:

  • Costs applied for must be documented in the budget
  • The grant will be transferred to the applicant’s department via internal invoicing
  • No later than one month after the project’s conclusion, a financial status report and a brief summary of the collaboration’s outcomes must be submitted to Business and Innovation. Unused funds must be returned.
  • For formalised collaborations, a collaboration agreement is required

Asessment of applications

Applications will be assessed in dialogue with a panel consisting of:

  • Two representatives from public/private sector organisations with experience collaborating with AU
  • Vice-dean Søren Michael Sindbæk, Arts, member of AU’s Business Committee
  • Head of Business Collaboration Kirsten Jensen, Enterprise and Innovation

The panel is supported by a secretariat at Enterprise and Innovation.

Evaluation of applications

Applications will be evaluated using a scoring system based on the submitted material.

Emphasis will be placed on the purpose of the collaboration project, its scientific and innovative value, as well as its potential and possible impact.

Applicants will typically receive a response within four weeks of the application deadline.
