Art history is full of dedicated and talented female artists who, each in their own way, have broken with the norms and conventions of their time regarding their art and their roles as women and artists. Despite their innovations in art and possible recognition in their time, these women have often been written out of art history.
As an art historian, I am interested in questions of gender and identity and the significance these questions have had, especially for the lives and art of female artists in different periods of art history. My lecture highlights the lives and art of selected female artists from different periods in art history and discusses the influence these artists had on contemporary and subsequent movements in art.
