This page is a summary of the current guidelines for the use of video at AU, describing its application in Brightspace and Panopto. Changes and any local guidelines that deviate from this are subject to reservation.
The table on this page is designed to guide the reader through the decision-making process regarding the streaming and recording of lectures at Aarhus University. By starting at the top and moving downward through the rows, the focus gradually narrows, helping to make informed choices based on specific criteria.
| What type of video is it? | For streaming and recordings where only the instructor is involved
If the instructor is presenting and/or recording lectures where no or only minor relevant individuals appear in the recording, it is the instructor who determines where the material is used. However, it is always recommended to stream rather than record material. Note: Some video recordings require so-called informed consent (e.g., recordings of patients). In such cases, participants must be informed about how the video will be used before recording (and it must not be used in a different context than the one consented to). | For streaming and recordings where others appear If the teaching is part of a structured course, and the recordings and streaming are placed in the corresponding course room in Brightspace, where only the students enrolled in the course and the instructor have access, no consent is required from the students to stream or record the teaching. However, the recordings must not be made available to anyone outside the course participants in Brightspace. Additionally, the video must be deleted after the semester ends, unless explicit consent is obtained from those appearing in the recording for further use in the course. As an instructor, you must always inform students that the session is being recorded. This is a GDPR requirement, which was addressed in spring 2021 through a general notification on the Blackboard homepage. | ||||||

Copy via Panopto.au.dk – but note that moving the video may affect previous students' access. | The video link is updated in Brightspace when old courses are copied. However, Content and External Tool Activity must be checked. | Copy the video via Panopto.au.dk – do not move it, as previous students may still be using it. | What happens if students interact with the video? (e.g., notes, quizzes, discussions, etc.) | Student notes, discussions, etc., are deleted along with the video as part of automatic housekeeping. | Student notes, discussions, etc., are deleted along with the video when the instructor/institute deletes the video. Be aware that if the same video is used in multiple courses, students' discussions/activities on the video may be shared across different groups. Instead, create a copy of the video and remember to update "Insert Stuff" with the new link.
